Edgemoor Veterinary Practice – providing high quality veterinary care throughout Ryedale and beyond

Our Surgery Facilities

pss ted logo Currently there is no mandatory minnimum standard or inspection of veterinary practices in the UK. For our clients peace of mind we are a member and supporter of the RCVS PSS. This means we are regularly inspected by the RCVS and are accredited as a General Small Animal (formerly Tier 2) Practice.

Modern purpose built surgery premises situated on the outskirts of Helmsley ensuring easy access. We have extensive and free on-site car parking adjacent to the surgery but staff are always happy to help with moving animals and heavy or bulky items to and from the car park – please ask! It would be appreciated if clients would avoid parking on the road which is a shared access.

Disabled clients can be reassured by the provision of dedicated disabled parking, front entrance ramp and single level client facilities including a disabled toilet.

Health and Safety:

We take H&S very seriously. Please respect signage and advice from staff.

Our premises are constructed so as to provide safe, easy, access and security systems are in operation to ensure patient, staff and client safety. We operate a zero tolerance policy for abuse (physical or verbal) of our staff.

All dogs should be on a lead and cats and small furries in a suitable and secure basket or box.

We have high hygiene standards throughout the practice. Clinical staff are trained to maintain clinical areas and we employ a dedicated housekeeping service to maintain hygiene in non clinical and client and staff areas.

All our equipment and facilities are regularly maintained and monitored at least to standards recommended by the HSE and RCVS

If you have any concerns please raise them with a member of staff.

Reception and waiting areas provide a spacious pleasant environment for clients and their pets with a selection of reading material and a toy box for children.

Consulting rooms (3) are designed for easy access and are spacious to allow for larger breeds of dog and for all interested family members to attend a consultation. Weighing facilities are available to weigh your pet.

Hospitalisation facilities are comfortable, well heated and ventilated and include separate wards for dogs (including large walk in kennels), cats and small furries. Separate facilities are available to isolate and barrier nurse infectious cases. All are in-patients are nursed by our qualified RVN’s and when necessary an ‘intensive care’ regime provides for more detailed supervision and nursing including ‘out of hours’.

It is normally possible for clients to arrange to visit long stay patients or other special cases.

Operating and surgical facilities are of a high standard to allow us to utilise the surgical expertise of our veterinary surgeons. George Skinner has undertaken further post grasduate training and holds a certificate in small animal surgery. This, along with the standard of our surgical facilities and theatre nurses means we can undertake the vast majority of surgical procedures ‘in house’with a separate operating theatre, up to date gaseous anaesthesia and anaesthetic monitoring

Dental procedures are routinely carried out utilising our dental facility which includes dental radiography, an ultrasonic scaler, drill and polisher similar to that used in human dentistry.

Radiography and ultrasound scanning:

Our imaging suite contains a high powered X-ray machine which along with automatic processing means we can produce radiographs of a very high standard, (we have been congratulated on the standard of our radiographs by veterinary specialists).

Our imaging equipment includes video endoscopy and a fibreoptic bronchoscope.

In-house laboratory:

We have invested heavily in a state of the art practice laboratory allowing same day results of tests which include blood cell counts, biochemistry, electrolytes and some hormones. This is indispensable when dealing with an urgent case, pre-anaesthetic testing and routine monitoring of cases, particularly over weekends and holiday periods when access to commercial laboratories is limited.

We are able to utilise the expertise of one of the UK’s most eminent veterinary cardiology specialist’s using ‘ecg over the telephone’ techniques allowing expert diagnostic and therapeutic skills without, in many cases, the need for a client to travel long distances with their pet.

Our facilities and expertise mean that most cases are managed ‘in house’. This avoids the need for referrals which can be stressful for patient and client, costly and time consuming. When access to facilities such as MRI or CT scanners is necessary we have well established and close links with respected and accredited referral centres.

Our latest branch surgery, which opened in March 2011, is conveniently located close to the town centre with car parking nearby. Situated in a characterful period property extensive internal renovations and alterations have provided a spacious and bright environment. The surgery is open daily Monday to Friday and stocks a range of diet foods and pet accessories. Consultations with veterinary surgeons and qualified veterinary nurses are by appointment only.

This small but well established surgery is conveniently located in the town centre and has more limited opening hours – please telephone for details and an appointment.

Clients will notice that, in contrast to our Helmsley surgery, both our Pickering and Kirkbymoorside premises are situated in period properties.

Whilst we can provide a high standard of waiting and consulting facilities in our two branch surgeries we only undertake surgery and detailed investigations at our Helmsley premises. We strongly believe that surgical procedures should only be undertaken in the excellent standard of facilities that our modern purpose built Helmsley surgery can provide.

To assist clients our veterinary ambulance provides safe, secure and complimentary transportation of patients between surgeries.

This arrangement allows clients the convenience of a local community based surgery with access to all that a modern purpose built facility can provide.
