Edgemoor Veterinary Practice – providing high quality veterinary care throughout Ryedale and beyond

George Skinner

I grew up in Sutton on the Forest, not far from York and decided at the age of 7 that I wanted to be a vet. Back then we had numerous family pets and I spent my school holidays on local farms and with local vets. After graduating in 1982 I started work in a very mixed practice in the Yorkshire Dales where I spent my first 3 years as a vet. After a short spell at a practice in Selby I moved to Helmsley in early 1986. I initially managed, then later bought the practice which has developed from a 1-2 vet mixed, but predominantly farm practice, to a high quality 100% small animal practice, serving Ryedale and beyond. My aim has been to create a community-based, semi-rural practice which offers the excellent standard of care often found only in specialised urban or referral centres.

During the 1990’s I developed and particular interest in small animal surgery and gained a post graduate certificate in small animal surgery. I also love running the practice despite the challenges it can bring.

At home I have 2 retired working labs – one black,’ Frankie’, who thinks he’s 10 months not 10 years old and a stately 14 year old gentleman ‘Rusty’- a rather grey fox red! We also have a cat called ‘Tosca’ – who comes and goes at will and still retains some of her semi-feral parentage, which comes to the fore when we want to deflea her.

Outside of work I enjoy gardening the half acre at home that I’m still developing after 30 years – it’ll be finished someday. I also like to turn my hand to most things ‘DIY’ (apart from anything electrical!). I’m a keen traveller and have found a particular love for Africa. As well as walking the dogs, I enjoy exploring on the Moors and Dales on foot.

Claire Thompson BVMS, MRCVS

Born and raised in north east Scotland, I lived next to a farm where I found my love for animals.  I went to Glasgow vet school and moved to my first job in north Yorkshire in 2005 where I met my husband. I started here at Edgemoor in 2008, currently working part time but spend the rest of my time entertaining my 2 young children. We have a variety of pets including cats, Guinea pigs, chickens and sheep. I love this part of the world and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else!

Will Sennitt BVSC MRCVS

I grew up in a small village near Hitchin, Hertfordshire where we were lucky enough to have a number of pets from dogs to little hamsters. My passion for veterinary care was sparked when any would become ill, I needed to know how we could help them. This passion drove me through school and Bristol Univeristy where I graduated as a vet in 2014 and is the same passion I have today to give pets the healthcare they deserve. I now have my own (slightly mad) Cocker Spaniel, called Bert who often takes me for walks around the Moors and puts up with me trying to play piano.
